In order to preserve the dignity and charm of a bygone era, the decor is elegant.  This is achieved, yet there is an underlying contemporary feel together with emphasis on the organic and the real.  The interplay of colours and textures provoke a tangible sense of comfort.  Coarse hand-woven silk, jute, linen, cotton and vibrantly coloured velvets.  The bedrooms with their soothing colours have been furnished with fine Egyptian cotton bed linen.  Three of the 14 bedrooms have their own small lounges and all bedrooms are en-suite.

Carefully chosen handmade objects are displayed and used.  Urns, pots and tiles made by master potters and embroidered curtains and cushions done by members of an embroidery guild.  A respect for the skill of artists and craftsmen are evident.

In the spectacular dining room the menu is designed to reflect the organic bounty of the Boland and has it’s origin deep inside South Africa’s cultural roots.  A cuisine of simple but refined dishes.  Where good unpretentious food and special wine add to the  pleasures of life.

The Hotel has an impressive wine cellar with deliberate attention on variety and the careful selection of superb vintage wines.  The cellar pays homage to the projection of the world of wine, the region and the culture of wine.

The oldest known photograph of Stellenbosch (taken between 1863 and 1866) and published in Stellenbosch Drie Eeue (1979), is of a scene in Church Street – and shows Coopmanhuijs on the far right of the picture.

The current Neo-Georgian architecture of the Old House section of Coopmanhuijs came into being between 1870 and 1900.

Coopmanhuijs was declared a National Heritage Site on 15 September 1978.

The Pieterse family purchased Coopmanhuijs as an investment in 1981, when it was a private residence for female students of Stellenbosch University.

The students moved out in 1984 and Coopmanhuijs became the residence of André and Helena Pieterse until 2007, when a Pieterse family company started converting it into Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel & Spa.
